Course Information for Students

This course is ideal for anyone who would like to start a career within animal care industries. The course covers the skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work in the animal care industries. You will build upon your practical skills and theory knowledge through working with a range of animals on our animal unit, attending classroom lessons, and through work placements in the animal care industry.

You need one of the following:

  • Introductory Diploma in a related subject

OR

  • Three GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above in English, Science and Maths

You should also have a standard of English and maths equivalent to Functional Skills Level 1 if you are progressing from a Level 1 qualification.  

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take into consideration your previous experience in your chosen subject.

You will be interviewed by a member of animal care staff to make sure this course is right for you.

The course will cover;

  • Feeding and Accommodation
  • Behaviour and Handling
  • Working in the Animal Care Industry
  • Health and Safety
  • Work Experience
  • Animal Breeds and Grooming
  • Animal Biology
  • British Wildlife

 In addition to these units, if you do not have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or the equivalent, you will study them alongside. 

 You will complete 150 hours of work experience in the animal care industry in separate block weeks during term time. 

You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course, including written assignments, exams and practical assessments. There will be at least one practical lesson on the animal unit a week, with the remainder being classroom delivery. This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.

You will be required to supply your own: 

  • Derby College Group green lab coat
  • Closed-toe flat steel toe-capped shoes/boots/wellingtons
  • Derby College Group polo (or polo shirt in navy blue, black or white) and sweatshirt
  • Writing materials and a folder
  • Memory stick

 Information on where to buy these will be given at enrolment. 

Long hair is to be tied back and no nail varnish, false nails, leggings, ripped clothing, fake eyelashes or jewellery (including piercings) must not be worn whilst on practical lessons. These rules are non-negotiable. 

This course is continually assessed throughout the year. The various assessment methods include written assignments, practical assessments, and written exams. You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course. You will have multiple assignments throughout the year and 3 exam style assessments towards the end of the academic year. 

If you achieve well on this course, you could progress to the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management or go into employment or an apprenticeship.
